City Mayors and Urban Regeneration

19 May 2005

We held a very successful City Mayors seminar  - thanks to all those who came along. Our speakers were Bruce Katz (Brookings), Martin Winter (Mayor of Doncaster) and Anna Randle (New Local Government Network). Key points were:

  • Elected mayors need more powers – especially fiscal powers. With the right powers, they can play a vital role in policy innovation and regeneration.
  • One size does not fit all – not all cities and towns will want elected mayors, and those that do will want different models and powers.
  • City boundaries do not match urban economies. Some of our larger cities may want elected mayors for the wider conurbation.

Here is our report of the seminar. And the presentations from Bruce KatzMartin Winter and Anna Randle.

Speakers

Bruce Katz, Director, Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program, Washington DC

Bruce runs the Metropolitan Policy Program at the Brookings Institute. He is also a Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics. Bruce was Chief of Staff in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development during the first Clinton administration, between 1993 - 1996.

Martin Winter, Mayor of Doncaster

Anna Randle, New Local Government Network
