Regional and city leadership in the North East: what's the answer?

22 May 2007

6.00-7.15pm
Portcullis House, Westminster (Room M)

Last year, the OECD Review of Newcastle in the North East concluded that regional institutions in the North East were fragmented, lacked influence and autonomy, and suffered from a democratic deficit. The review recommended a stronger role for sub-regions, with more financial incentives and stronger capacity at the city-regional level - including city-regional mayors.

This event will discuss the OECD's findings and look ahead to the CSR sub-national review of economic development and regeneration. It will ask:

  • How can RDAs be strengthened and made more accountable?
  • What functions should be devolved to sub-regions?
  • Are elected city-regional mayors realistic?
  • How useful are Multi Area Agreements and City Development Companies?
  • Where next on Lyons?
  • What leadership role should business play in cities and regions?

The Centre for Cities is working with ippr north and Newcastle City Council, to follow up last year's OECD Review. We will also be publishing a "One Year On" report.

Places are strictly limited. If you'd like to attend, please contact Ben Harrison on 020 7470 6187 or b.harrison@ippr.org
