Why does the North/South divide matter to London?
The Northern Economic Futures Commission will be holding this event, co-hosted by the Centre for London, to act as the London launch of the commission’s final report, Northern Prosperity is National Prosperity: A Strategy for Revitalising the UK Economy.
Tuesday 15 January, 2pm – 4pm
The Exchange, Fielden House, 28 London Bridge Street, London, SE1 9SG
At this event, Ed Cox, Director, IPPR North, and Deputy Chair of the Northern Economic Futures Commission, will present on the report and outline some of its key recommendations. This will be followed by responses and a panel discussion on how to unleash Northern economic potential for the benefit of the UK economy as a whole. Confirmed speakers include: Ben Rogers, Director of the Centre for London; Richard Woolhouse, Head of Tax & Fiscal Policy, Confederation of British Industry; Lord Curry, chair of NFU Mutual; and Baroness Parminter as chair.
The Northern Economic Futures Commission was established in July 2011 to spearhead an ambitious programme of activity and research over 18 months to look at the critical issues facing the economy of the North and set out a new approach to local and regional economic policy, driven by decision-makers in the North of England.
In its final report, the commission sets out a new economic agenda for the north of England, one which seeks to place the region at the heart of the UK's 'rebalancing' towards business investment and export performance. Alongside a raft of recommendations focused on jobs and skills, innovation, SMEs, natural assets, transport, housing, spatial policy, finance and investment, and institutions, indicators and monitoring, the report presents a 12-point plan for growth.
This event is free and open to all but it is essential that you book. To book your place please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
