Start date:  14 Jul 2011

Who is supporting the far right and why? While the British National Party has suffered setbacks in recent elections, support for the far-right shows no signs of abating.

14 July 2011
5.30–6.30pm at IPPR’s London office
4th floor, 14 Buckingham Street
London WC2N 6DF

Respondent: Mike Kenny

Ten years on from the 2001 urban disturbances, continuing support for the English Defence League (EDL) and other fringe parties reveals that the drivers of far right support have by no means been addressed. In this first in-depth study of far right members, organisers and voters, Matt Goodwin reveals what drives some citizens to support this exclusionary form of politics. The book also throws light on the wider social trends that have created a favourable climate for the far right.

Matt Goodwin is Lecturer in the School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Nottingham and an Associate Fellow of Chatham House.

Mike Kenny is Chair of Politics at Queen Mary, University of London, and an Associate Fellow at IPPR.
