Green prosperity shared by all? Jobs and communities in the green economy
The Coalition has said its Green Deal home insulation scheme is likely to support up to 250,000 ‘green jobs’ at its peak and other government renewable energy policies will help to create jobs at a time of high unemployment. But little is known about what these job markets will look like: to what extent are they likely to provide sustainable employment? What opportunities will there be for local workers, for young people, for the long-term unemployed and for other disadvantaged groups?

IPPR will be publishing findings from a recent learning exchange to California, US, which will highlight both challenges and opportunities on job creation and job quality in the green economy, offering important lessons for the UK.
As the government prepares to publish its Roadmap to a Green Economy, a panel of speakers from the worlds of business, environment and politics will debate the following questions:
- What are the challenges for government and employers in ensuring that policies for green growth provide good social and economic as well as environmental benefits?
- What alternatives are there to prevent the green economy perpetuating existing inequalities in the labour market?
How can government, business, environmental and community interest groups come together to ensure that communities can benefit from local employment opportunities?
To RSVP for this event, please contact Andy Stuckey or call 020 7470 6100.
