The Regional Impact of Universities: Report launch and panel discussion

IPPR North, higher education, reform, young people

Start date:  13 Feb 2012

Research carried out by IPPR North for Universities UK sought to understand better the impact of recent changes to regional and local structures and the emerging relations between universities and regions.

Monday 13 February 2012
11.00-13.00, to be followed by lunch
University of Manchester

In compiling the report particular consideration has been given to changes in the regional infrastructure following the demise of Regional Development Agencies, and the Government’s plan for growth and other changes announced as part of the localism agenda. These have been considered in the light of other changes to public spending and more specifically the current reforms to the higher education system.

Emerging themes highlight the diversity of the sector and the varying roles that institutions can play within their region. The role of LEPs and how universities can participate in the new regional structure are also addressed, as are regional funding flows and the opportunities for universities in terms of civic leadership. Specific issues relate to business engagement, student enterprise and entrepreneurship, Regional Growth and ERDF funding and workforce development.

Ed Cox, Director of IPPR, North will provide an overview of the report findings and will then chair the panel session that follows. The panel will comprise of Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, President and Vice-Chancellor, University of Manchester; Sir Howard Bernstein, Chief Executive, Manchester City Council; Professor John Brooks, Vice-Chancellor, Manchester Metropolitan University and Dr Mike Edelman, Chief Executive, Nanoco.

It is hoped that the research and this launch will both enable a better understanding of these emerging issues, and identify priorities for future action.

This event will be held at Manchester University, Manchester Dental Education Centre, Higher Cambridge Street, Manchester, M15 6FH. If you would like to attend, please complete the booking form by following this link and return it to events@universitiesuk.ac.uk.
