Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China
Perhaps no one in the twentieth century had a greater long-term impact on world history than Deng Xiaoping. Pragmatic yet disciplined he was the driving force behind China's radical transformation in the late twentieth century from a chaotic, closed country to a powerful international force.

Join us for a fascinating conversation with Ezra Vogel author of Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China along with noted China experts Elizabeth Wright and Martin Jacques.
Deng confronted the damage wrought by the Cultural Revolution, dissolved Mao's cult of personality, and loosened the economic and social policies that had stunted China's growth. His reforms lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty, yet at the same time he demonstrated his authoritarian roots, most notoriously when he ordered the crackdown in June 1989 at Tiananmen Square.
Drawing on decades of research, including scores of interviews with Deng’s family members and colleagues Deng Xiaoping and the transformation of China charts Deng’s tumultuous rise to power, from the grassroots of the revolution through his work in the seventies, eighties and nineties. Through examining Deng’s rise, China expert Ezra Vogel gives us a broad sense of how contemporary China came to be and how it functions today — politically, economically, and socially.
