Reform beyond the expenses scandal
04 November 2009With The Rt Hon Michael Wills MP, Minister of State for Constitutional Renewal
ippr has put together a short volume of essays written by the leading think tanks to discuss the case for political and constitutional reform in the wake of revelations over MPs' expenses. This event saw the launch of A Future For Politics: Ways to reform our political system, where the leading think tanks debate the pros and cons of a range of approaches to putting our democracy on firmer footing.
The scandal of MPs expenses has catalysed an important debate not only on the propriety of our MPs, but also about larger questions such as trust in our political system, the role of MPs and the power they have to influence change, the extent to which Parliament and MPs are accountable to the public, the way political parties are funded, and electoral reform.
The political think tanks can play an important role here as they are not so driven or diverted as the political parties by the march of events or fast moving news agendas. In this spirit ippr approached colleagues in leading UK think tanks from across the political spectrum to contribute their considered thoughts on the subject, producing a booklet featuring Centre Forum, Demos, the Fabian Society, ippr, Policy Exchange, Progress and Reform.
