Beyond the myth of the market – principles for a new economic policy
18 December 20081:00 - 2:30pm
30-32 Southampton Street, London WC2E 7RA
Larry Elliott has emerged as one of the most trenchant critics of UK and global economic policy over the last decade. Way ahead of the credit crunch and the recession, both in his regular columns and in a series of books, he warned of the folly of a strategy based on unsustainable debt and a belief in the infallibility of markets.
ippr is delighted that Larry joined us for a discussion of what should be done now, not only about the immediate crisis, but also about the longer term. He talked about his ideas for a fundamental overhaul of economic policy, aimed at a more sustainable future.

Speakers
Larry Elliott has been at the Guardian for over 17 years, and the newspaper's economics editor for the past 11. He has coauthored a number of books on globalisation and the UK economy with Dan Atkinson, including The Age of Insecurity (1999), and Fantasy Island (2007). Their most recent book, The Gods that Failed, dissects the mess that a blind faith in markets has gotten us into. His areas of particular interest are globalisation, trade, Europe, development and the interface between economics and the environment. Outside of the Guardian, he is on the editorial board of Catalyst, a council member of the Overseas Development Institute and a visiting fellow at the University of Hertfordshire.
