As the UK plots its path towards a low-carbon economy, the Northern Energy Taskforce wants to ensure our energy system is not a challenge we will struggle to cope with but an opportunity we are ready to seize.

As the UK plots its path towards a low-carbon economy, the Northern Energy Taskforce wants to ensure our energy system is not a challenge we will struggle to cope with but an opportunity we are ready to seize.

The north of England has historically supplied the whole nation with heat and light and has also been a major contributor to the health of the wider economy. However, as our energy needs change, its future role in ‘keeping the lights on and our homes warm’ is now open for question. The energy sector in the North faces challenges, but it is well positioned to serve the UK’s changing energy needs and has the potential to reassert itself as the nations ‘powerhouse’.

Our first report examines the challenges and opportunities in the Northern energy sector and highlights key questions for further analysis. The second report, to be launched at this event, will plot out some possible futures. Speakers include:

  • Sir John Harman - Chair, Northern Energy Taskforce
  • Emma Bridge - Cheif Executive, Community Energy England
  • Prof Jon Gluyas - Executive Director, Durham Energy Institute
  • Darren Baxter - Researcher, IPPR North

The event will take place at Committee Room 10, House of Commons, Westminster, London, SW1A 0AA, on the 20th April from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.
