Martin Ford on Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of Mass Unemployment

Thu 24 Sep 2015, 14:00 - 15:30
IPPR, 4th Floor, 14 Buckingham Street, London WC2N 6DF
Join us for a discussion with Martin Ford about his new book, Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of Mass Unemployment.

Silicon Valley executive, Ford, argues that the growth of automation threatens the jobs not just of those working in relatively routine manufacturing positions, but also of highly-educated service sector workers. The picture he paints of technology and our technological future raises numerous troubling questions about the way we live, about our education and skills development systems, and about whether and how we can expect economic growth to be sustained.

The event is part of IPPR’s programme of work on training and skills, which includes the New Skills at Work programme with J.P. Morgan. It will be chaired by Diana Fox Carney, Director of Strategy & Engagement, IPPR, with a response from Laura Gardiner, Senior Research and Policy Analyst, Resolution Foundation.
