The Government should introduce elected mayors in every major town and city in England, according to a paper for the latest edition of ppr, the quarterly journal of the Institute for Public Policy Research (ippr) published today (Wednesday). This would give stronger local political leadership, clearer accountability and encourage central government to decentralise more powers to local government.

Budget must lift working poor out of poverty

The Chancellor must use Wednesday’s Budget to lift the working poor out of poverty. There are 1.4 million children living in households where at least one parent works, according to the Institute for Public Policy Research (ippr). ippr argues that at the very least the Government has a responsibility to ensure that when people get a job they are lifted out of poverty.
