ippr reaction to today's announcement to enforce stricter work rules on migrants

22 February 2009

In reaction to today's announcement by the Home Secretary on migrants facing tighter work rules, Tim Finch, Head of Migration at the Institute for Public Policy Research (ippr) said:

“It may be reasonable to tighten the system slightly at a time when migrant workers are not likely to be in such high demand during the recession. But it’s important the system remains flexible enough to meet the needs of British industry through the downturn as well as when the upturn comes.

“If there are British born people with the skills to fill the jobs that need doing - that is good news.  But in their absence, migrant workers can fill the gaps and, in the process, help our economy.

“The government is right to resist calls, from the Conservatives and others, for an annual limit on immigration. Such a quota would be artificial, very difficult to enforce and economically damaging.”
