Renewing the UK’s energy mix
Renewing the UK’s energy mix Current
business and industry , energy , environment , sustainability
Britain is committed to reducing carbon emissions from the energy sector to close to zero by 2050.
By 2050, the three sources of UK electricity are likely to be renewables (in particular onshore and offshore wind farms); coal, biomass or gas-fired power stations fitted with CCS technology; and nuclear power. In making this transition, the UK needs to ensure that security of supply is maintained as demand increases. This means a greater reliance on gas over the next decade. IPPR’s programme of work will examine the economic benefits of individual technologies, grid management to cope with a new range of technologies, and the role that innovation can play in making Britain a home to low carbon technologies in the energy sector.
