The Health and Social Care team is part of ippr's programme on public services. The team undertakes a range of research projects that focus on improving health outcomes and reducing inequalities, all underpinned by social justice.

ippr has a strong track record in influencing policy and political debate on health and social care, and has made innovative contributions in recent years to health service reform, social care, mental health services and early years care.

In addition to conducting long-term research projects, the Health and Social Care team runs occasional events and seminars on topical issues.

In 2008, ippr will be hosting a series of high profile health policy seminars. Each seminar will focus on a ‘hot topic’ policy issue, bringing together numerous senior opinion formers and stakeholders from Government, NHS, professional bodies, academia, and the private and voluntary sectors.

We have recently published a seminar summary as part of our work on private spending on healthcare. The seminar brought together international and national experts and policymakers to explore trends in individuals’ private health care spending and to discuss the impact of private spending on health system goals including efficiency and equity, and to consider future policy options.

In December 2007 the team published Care in a New Welfare Society:
Unpaid care, welfare and employment. This report provides a policy framework for unpaid care in welfare and employment policy. It proposes reform of the central pillars of welfare and workplace policy: the social security and tax credit system, and flexible working and leave rights.

In September 2007 the team published Great Expectations: Achieving a sustainable health system.
