Research Teams
Introduction
The Centre for Asset-Based Welfare is the UK's foremost research centre for the study of how savings and assets affect welfare. Evidence suggests that holding assets may improve life chances and provide a springboard out of poverty. The Centre’s aim is to undertake and commission research into why and how this happens, and develop policies to bring the benefits of asset ownership to all.
The Centre for Asset-Based Welfare forms part of the Social Policy team at ippr. The Centre was the first to propose Child Trust Funds, which have since been adopted by the government and rolled out to every new baby in Britain.
We have also undertaken research on:
-
expanding Child Trust Funds
-
financial education and inclusion
-
policies that build assets through homeownership and savings (including the Saving Gateway )
-
wealth inequality.

The Centre for Asset-Based Welfare is supported by The Children's Mutual. Without their support, this innovative work would not be possible.
