The role of China in Africa
28 June 2006 - 28 June 2006Africa was the subject of unprecedented international political attention in 2005. But one issue which has enormous implications for Africa was largely absent from these high-level international discussions: the role of China.
International policymakers have underestimated the extent to which China is now a major player in Africa. They have also failed to appreciate the extent to which this creates new challenges and opportunities for Africa.
To address some of these issues, the ippr held a major international conference on ‘The role of China in Africa’. Lord Triesman, Foreign Office Minister, gave a keynote speech at this event.
High level speakers from China and a number of African countries also participated in the event. A number of sessions looked at the impact of China in Africa in terms of investment and trade; natural resource management; good governance and human rights.
The presentations of some of our speakers are available here: Duncan Green, Oxfam; Wenran Jiang, China Institute, University of Alberta; Raphie Kaplinsky, Institute of Development Studies; Xu Weizhong, China Institute of Contemporary International Relations. Please note that these presentations represent the views of the authors and not necessarily of ippr.
