Asylum and Migration Fact Files

Contact Email: info@ippr.org

Introduction

The ippr Fact Files on Migration and Asylum sought to provide the empirical evidence necessary for a more comprehensive and constructive debate on the issues.

One of the key objectives of ippr's Migration and Equalities Programme is to engage the media and public in an informed and evidence-based debate about asylum and immigration to the UK. Migration is a complex and politically sensitive area but public understanding of the issues is not benefited by the limited objective information currently available. As part of this process we consolidated the available evidence on asylum and immigration issues in the form of accessible fact files.

Until recently, the public debate over migration has been almost exclusively concerned with asylum, ignoring and sometimes confusing the distinction between asylum and other routes of migration. With the FactFile showing that foreign workers now account for 1 in 20 people employed in the UK, the examination of labour migration to the UK is both timely and important.
