Baroness Suttie is a Liberal Democrat member of the House of Lords. She is a party whip and a member of the foreign affairs team.
Alison was head of the Liberal Democrat leader's office from 2006 to 2010, and served as deputy chief of staff to the deputy prime minster for the first 18 months of the Coalition government from 2010 to 2011.
Alison also worked for 10 years in the European parliament, where she gained an in-depth knowledge of EU politics and the EU institutions. She was press secretary to the president of the European parliament from 2002 to 2004.
In addition to being a working peer, Alison is now putting her knowledge into use as an independent consultant. She regularly runs a variety of training courses on effective campaigning and influencing for UK civil servants, NGOs and charities, as well as doing some occasional guest lecturing.
Born and brought up in Hawick in the Scottish Borders, Alison graduated from Edinburgh's Heriot-Watt University in 1990 with a degree in French and Russian. She also studied at Voronezh University in the Soviet Union in 1988 and the Universite de Haute Alsace in Mulhouse, France in 1989.
