Private Roundtable: Job creation and innovation in the North West: The role of the private sector in levelling up

IPPR, in partnership with the British Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (BVCA), hosted this private virtual roundtable on the role of the private sector in the government's levelling up agenda. This event took place on Thursday 9th June from 14:30-15:30 (GMT) via Zoom.

The government’s pledge to ‘level up’ the country will continue to be a crucial political issue in the lead up to the next general election. The levelling up white paper went some way to explain how the government plans to achieve their ambitions, but many questions remain unanswered on specifically how their pledges will be delivered. Levelling up will require significant investment in areas outside London and the South East; only a small proportion of which can come from public investment.

With the North West of England home to the largest amount of private capital backed jobs outside London and the South East – according to a report published today by EY (commissioned by the BVCA) – this roundtable will explore the role of the private sector in delivering investment in the North West, so as to grow distinct, flourishing economies outside of the South East.

Our speakers include:

  • Tulip Siddiq MP, Shadow Economic Secretary to the Treasury
  • Jo Lappin, Chief Executive of the Cumbria LEP
  • Michael Moore, Director General at BVCA
