About A new world order: Navigating the UK’s place in the world

The global landscape is changing rapidly. Instability is growing. Power is shifting. Alliances we once took for granted are in flux. New global challenges continue to surface. The result is a more volatile and uncertain world – a world between orders.

The UK can no longer afford to do business as usual. This moment demands new thinking, including a clearer sense of what progressive international policy should look like, how we should position ourselves moving forward, and who we should work with to face these oncoming challenges.

Ten years on from Brexit, the future of the UK’s relationship with the EU is once again in question. The government has signalled its wish to deepen ties with the Union to overcome the immediate challenges of the day. Bolder options going beyond the ‘reset’ are increasingly on the table, including an emerging conversation about rejoining.

But the path forward is not straightforward. Political and geopolitical challenges abound – from freedom of movement, the rising far right, and how far the UK is willing – and should – align with EU approaches on issues such as defence, AI and clean technology.

On the tenth anniversary of the Brexit referendum, we are delighted to be joined by former deputy prime minster, Sir Nick Clegg and former first vice president of the European Commission, Baroness Cathy Ashton, to discuss where the UK should focus in this chaotic international context – with a particular focus on relations with Europe - to achieve progressive goals at home and internationally.
