About Private roundtable: Expectations and pressures: Looking ahead to the Autumn Budget

As the end of the summer recess looms, so does the Chancellor’s next challenge – the Autumn Budget. Come September, all eyes will be on Rachel Reeves as she might be forced to make difficult choices to meet her fiscal rules.

Despite being just one year into their term, with a significant majority, a context of U-turns and both domestic and international economic headwinds means this could be a pivotal moment for Starmer’s government. Tax hikes or spending cuts might be necessary. This poses questions about what options are available to the Chancellor that both help improve the economic outlook and are popular with voters.

This event will offer the chance to discuss what the options are for the Chancellor in the Autumn Budget, how these might be received, and what this means for the perception of this Labour government.

Our speakers will include:

  • Helen Miller, director, Institute for Fiscal Studies
  • Martin Sandbu, European economics commentator, Financial Times
  • Carsten Jung, associate director for economic policy, IPPR
