About The future of the ‘special relationship’ in a changing world

IPPR is delighted to be hosting this event exploring the future of the UK’s relationship with the United States of America.

As global alliances are reshaped by shifting power dynamics, growing economic nationalism and the emergence of new security challenges, the transatlantic partnership remains a cornerstone of the UK’s foreign policy. Yet questions are mounting about how both sides can sustain a shared democratic and strategic vision in a more fragmented world.

We are excited to be welcoming Calum Miller MP, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs, and Gideon Rachman, Chief Foreign Affairs Commentator at the Financial Times, to discuss the following questions:

  • Can and should the ‘special relationship’ remain central to UK foreign policy in a world defined by multipolar competition?
  • How should the UK balance its relationship with the US alongside growing engagement with Europe and the Global South?
  • To what extent are UK and US strategic interests diverging, and what does that mean for future collaboration?
  • What might a progressive vision for UK–US cooperation look like in the 21st century?

Attendance at this event is by invitation only. For more information, please contact events@ippr.org.
