EU reset marks new chapter, says IPPR

Reacting to the UK-EU reset breakthrough, Marley Morris, associate director for migration, trade and communities at IPPR, said:
"Of all the deals announced this month, today’s UK-EU reset is by far the most significant. The Security and Defence Partnership strengthens protections against Russian aggression in the face of an increasingly unreliable US, while proposed agreements on agri-food and electricity trading will reduce costs and support energy security.
"Though the fishing industry may feel shortchanged by the 12-year concession on access to waters, smoother trade for their products offers some balance. In other areas, what are seen as compromises could turn out to be mutually beneficial. For example, a youth experience scheme will bring new opportunities for young people, while still giving our government full control over migration.
"This deal marks a new chapter in UK-EU relations and should be seen as the beginning of deeper cooperation for security and growth."
The deal with the EU reflects IPPR recommendations to the government, including:
- Negotiating a SPS agreement with the EU
- Negotiating a youth mobility scheme with the EU
- Linking UK and EU emissions trading schemes
