Healey speech reaction: Government must match economic ambition with action, says IPPR

Responding to the Labour party conference speech from the chancellor John Healey, Harry Quilter-Pinner, executive director at IPPR, said:

"For too long the government has been an observer of the economy when it should have been an active participant. The vision the Chancellor set out today will see the government actively shaping the economy, creating jobs in the industries it wants, in the places it wants, benefitting the people it wants.

"However, it will take more than a conference speech to rewire the British economy. The Chancellor will need to take on vested interests, devolve significant powers away from Whitehall, and make difficult choices on tax, investment and public ownership.

“With public frustration and anger at the cost of living running deep across the country, the stakes could hardly be higher. But if the government gets this right, it could mark the beginning of a more productive, more resilient and more broadly shared period of growth."
