Reacting to the announcement of a ‘one-in, one-out’ migration pilot, Marley Morris, associate director for migration, trade and communities, said:

"The 'one-in, one-out' pilot announced today is an important starting point for stronger UK-France cooperation on migration and asylum. After successive deals between the UK and France focused on enforcement, this proposal finally begins to consider ways to protect some of the refugees living in Calais.

“But for this deal to work it will need to eventually be scaled up. If the scale is too small, it may not have a meaningful deterrent effect for those considering whether to cross the Channel in small boats.

“In the long run, the government should also consider how to combine this deal with sustainable safe routes for refugees, in order to divert people away from making dangerous journeys across Europe in the first place.”
