Press Story

Commenting on today’s report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Luke Murphy, IPPR associate director and head of its work on climate, nature, and energy, said:

“The message of this report is so loud and clear that even those at the back must hear – globally we’re not on track to meet our climate goals, the consequences of inaction are severe, and the time for bold action is now.

“Unfortunately, the starkness of the message today is at odds with the scale of the response that the UK government offered in its budget last week. The government has been warned repeatedly that it is not on track to meet its climate targets and the budget did very little to change that.

“The government has promised to have a 'Green Day' at the end of this month, but in the fight against the climate crisis, every day must be a green day. The UK government needs to act now to reduce emissions, invest in green industries, and deliver a just transition to an economy that is clean, fair, and prosperous.”
