Jon Cruddas

Jon Cruddas is co-chair of the Independent Commission on Community and Social Cohesion and Senior Fellow at the McDonald Centre for Theology, Ethics, and Public Life at the University of Oxford.

He is also an Honorary Fellow of Nuffield College Oxford and Honorary Professor at the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues at the University of Birmingham.

From 2001 to 2004, he was Labour MP for Dagenham and Rainham from 2001 to 2024. He stood be deputy leader of the Labour party in 2007, and between 2012 and 2015 served in the shadow cabinet as policy coordinator for the party. Before this, he served in the Labour party research department, the office of the general secretary, and subsequently 10 Downing Street, working on labour market policy and relations with the trade unions.   

He is the author of The Dignity of Labour (2021), which explores the economics and future of work, and A Century of Labour (2024), a history of the Labour party. He is currently writing a history of the relationship between the Labour party and Catholicism.
