The Kyoto World Water Forum is an important opportunity for the international community to get serious about the scale of the global water and sanitation crisis. This unique collection of essays, bringing together some of the leading thinkers on water and sanitiation issues, does just this.

Over 1 billion people have no access to clean drinking water and 2.4 billion people lack safe sanitation. This is a major cause of death and morbidity worldwide. In the developing world, one child dies every fifteen seconds from diarrhoea, caused largely by poor sanitation and dirty water.

"Clean water and safe sanitation is crucial to better health for poor people; the history of the UK shows this very clearly. This report should be required reading for those going to Kyoto." - Baroness Margaret Jay, Chair of the Overseas Development Institute

"Excellent. One of the best reports on water and sanitation that I have seen." - Glenys Kinnock, MEP

"Dirty water and unsafe sanitation are a major cause of child deaths worldwide. The report draws out some important point of agreement on what is needed to address the global water and sanitation crisis. It deserves to be widely read." - Mike Aaronson, Chief Executive, Safe the Children Fund UK
