One of the most promising technological developments that can help us transition to net zero is the production of hydrogen fuel, which has attracted significant attention from policymakers and businesses.

Despite this growing interest, there is a need for greater clarity about the role hydrogen can play in this transition – not only from an environmental perspective but from an economic one.

In the north of England, hydrogen has been presented as a key plank of future economic growth and prosperity that can help level up the North’s industrial heartlands.

This report aims to identify the true potential of the UK’s hydrogen economy, demystify the role that hydrogen will play in helping the UK reach net zero and evaluate the current state of play of hydrogen development in the North.
